How Many Electrons In Cl

Chalkboard with description of periodic table notation for chlorine. There is a square with three values in it. Top has atomic number, center has element symbol, and bottom has atomic mass value. The atomic number equals number of protons and also the number of electrons in a neutral atom. Atomic mass equals the mass of the entire atom.

Check out the blackboard. That box on the left has all of the data you lot need to know virtually i element. Information technology tells you the mass of one cantlet, how many pieces are inside, and where it should be placed on the periodic table.

In the next department we're going to cover electron orbitals or electron shells. This may exist a new topic to some of you.

Electrons In The Shells

Take a wait at the picture below. Each of those colored balls is an electron. In an atom, the electrons spin effectually the eye, also called the nucleus. The electrons like to be in separate shells/orbitals. Shell number 1 tin only concord two electrons, shell two can hold 8, and for the first xviii elements shell three tin can hold a maximum of eight electrons. Equally you larn about elements with more than eighteen electrons you lot will find that shell three can concur more than eight. Once i shell is total, the next electron that is added has to move to the next trounce.

So... for the element of CHLORINE, you already know that the atomic number tells you the number of electrons. That means there are 17 electrons in a chlorine atom. Looking at the film, you can see there are two electrons in shell one, eight in shell two, and seven in shell three.

Examples of Compounds with Chlorine

Sodium Chloride

This is sodium chloride, also known as table common salt. Most people scientist know that the formula for common salt is NaCl. One sodium (Na) cantlet gives it's electron to one chlorine (Cl) cantlet. Chlorine then has the eight electrons in its outer beat to make it "happy". Sodium is "happy" considering it has now given up its one actress electron.

Aluminum Trichloride

Chlorine (Cl) can besides bond with aluminum (Al). Aluminum has 3 extra electrons and volition hands allow the chlorine atoms use them. Considering aluminum has 3, that means three chlorine atoms tin bond. They make the formula AlCl3 , also known equally aluminum trichloride. Each of the chlorine atoms gets an electron to fill its shell, and the aluminum loses iii, giving it a filled shell too (remember, Aluminum has three extra electrons). The name trichloride means three chlorine atoms are involved.

Nitrogen Trichloride

Nitrogen can combine with three chlorine atoms, forming Nitrogen trichloride, or NClthree . Nitrogen shares its electrons with the chlorine atoms, so all of the atoms have their shells filled.

Take a expect at the dots around the atoms. All of them now accept eight electrons, and a filled outer beat out!
